Larta's Nano Republic Conference

July 22, 2002

Last Wednesday, over 250 attendees came to hear discussions on the possible direction of nanotechnology science from some of the most renowned leaders working in the field.

The event was opened with a keynote address from Jim Heath, one of the co-founders of The California Nanosystems Institute and a world leader in molecular science. During his keynote, The Hype and Hope of Nanotechnology, which addressed near and far-term technologies that are emerging from the field, Heath also told the audience of his proposed research plans for his upcoming professorship position at Caltech, which will begin sometime in 2003 after he leaves his Acting Co-Director position at CNSI. Heath plans to continue his work in quantum computing as well as biotech applications, where he perceives considerable market potential.

The all day event also included science presentations and panel sessions from three prominent nano disciplines--life sciences, materials and sensors and security, which featured an pre-panel presentation from Jay Davis, the National Security Fellow at The Center for Global Security Research. Davis' presentation, The Security Application: Nanotechnology's Role in Bio Terrorism, addressed how nano science could be used in counter-terrorism technologies, and the strict criteria that government agencies are hoping these new technologies will meet.
